Classes went okay. The first class missed about 20 minutes because the vice principal made a really long Monday morning announcement! The other 3 classes had a pop song lesson, so it was pretty easy. They enjoyed it.
After school, I went to Yeoido (an 'island' in the Han River, though it's mostly attached to land). It's a big financial/business area. I met Kwang Min and we went to dinner at a BBQ place. We had a set menu that came with pork--and then squid and pig skin... I only had the pork--I wasn't up to the squid or skin. Though everyone says that having pig skin is good for your health/skin I'm not too sure about that. After dinner, we went to a pie/bakery shop and got a few little pie cups and a cream puff to go. We walked to Yeoido Park and then on to the Han River. We sat by the river and ate the cream puff. Kwang Min also helped me with some Korean.

Baking, Soccer and Church
This morning I didn't do much--caught up on my blog and uploaded pictures. Then I went to Hapjeong to the Homeplus to meet Kwangmin and buy a beater. We got to the store and the sales clerk actually recognized me/us, haha. I also got a measuring cup, but it's not in the measurements that I'm used to, so it's a little difficult to use. I wish I had brought measuring cups along.
Anyway, after shopping, we came back to my area and had lunch at a bibimbap restaurant near where I live. Then it was time to tackle cookie baking. Kwang Min had never baked before so it was fun showing him what to do. I made my favorite pudding cookies, but I don't think the pudding mix was as much as normal because they weren't as moist as they normally are--but I'll get to that later. Well, we tried using my new beaters, but even at the lowest setting they are way too fast/powerful. The butter went flying when the beaters touched them. Another problem is that the bowl is kind of shallow, so the next purchase is a bowl with taller sides! So, we just used muscle power to mash the butter up. It was a little bit of work, but not too hard. The first batch we put in came out a little burnt-but only on one side of them. The rest turned out pretty nice. However, later when people were eating them I noticed they were crumbly and they're never crumbly. :(
After we finished baking we headed out to soccer, bringing along a cookie for every person. Kwang Min also took about 5 cookies back with him (he put the batter on the tray!) I handed out cookies before soccer and everyone seemed pretty happy. :) We had 10 people show up for soccer. Originally Jacob and I got put on the same team and I teased him because he wanted to be on opposite teams so he could play against me (he's a forward and I play defense). Then John, our captain, made me switch to the other team because there was one guy wearing a shirt the same color as the pennies. The last 5 minutes that I played were probably the best--I had two big defensive plays (against Jacob) and I also had a good shot on goal.
I took off for church and made it there just in time to change into regular clothes and sit down. Father Bernard had mass again, but the other 3 priests were also helping with the mass. After church I stopped in Hongdae to meet Kwangmin and had dinner. We went to Isaac's Toast (the sandwich place I ate at while at Inje so often) and I got the "bacon best" sandwich and a kiwi juice. Mm...just like in the old days.

Gotcha Day
This is the second time, and 2 times in a row that I've celebrated my Gotcha Day in Korea--away from home. I returned late-ish from Hongdae Thursday night and hopped on skype when I got back. It was almost midnight and then...I skyped with my Mom and Martin. So, I got to talk to my Mom on my Gotcha Day. :) I also got to see Toby on his birthday!
Then...I met my friend Jacob in Hongdae. We had a meeting with my friend Ji (Sung Min) and someone Ji knew from work who wanted a tutor for her son. Our meeting was on the other side of Seoul, but we decided we'd have lunch together first. Hongdae is close to where Jacob lives, so he has all his favorite restaurants/places to eat that he knows. We went to a place called "Burger B" and then I realized I had been there one of my last nights in Seoul last December! Anyway, we showed up there a little after 11 and they told us they didn't open til 11:30. So we walked around a little and went back. I was trying to decide what to eat...burger, mac n cheese, nachos....I picked the mac n cheese because I had meat last night. It was pretty good. Jacob cut a piece off his burger so I did get to try some burger too. Then we went on our way to the hospital to meet Ji and the family. We were a few minutes late and I felt bad, but Jacob didn't seem too concerned. Ji called me while we were on the way and said the whole family was going to be there--originally it was just going to be the mom and son, but the dad and their other 2 daughters were also coming. So, Ji helped translate for Jacob and the parents while I played/entertained their two stinkin' adorable girls. They were probably 2 and 4. Soo so cute! I wanted to ask if they need a baby sitter, but they live reallllly far away from me. After the family left, Jacob and I hung out with Ji. Actually, when we arrived, Ji held out his hand for me to shake it and I noticed it was all wrapped up. I asked him what happened. Some guy in his room threw a knife at him! When Ji put his hand up to protect himself, it cut the side of his hand and he had to get 6 stitches!! Ji ordered pizza for us and we went up to the top floor which was outside and sat out there talking and had the pizza delivered up there. It was a lot of fun. And...Ji and Jacob are like a match made in heaven. They both love Manchester United (soccer team) and it was funny to watch them interact.
We left the hospital and I went to Ichon Station to meet Kim and Kwangmin. There was an International fireworks display and every year they are shot off from Yeoido (an 'island' in the Han River). We decided that we would watch from across the river in Ichon. It was still really crowded in Ichon. After we met, we went to look for dinner. Kwangmin had a Japanese restaurant in mind, but it hadn't opened for dinner yet. Because Kim is Celiac, it was really difficult to find a place. Luckily, I have been to Ichon many times because that is the station/area where Hwa Sun and Jaebin live! I remembered a kimbap store and we went there--Kim was able to get something gluten free.
Then, it was time to face the crowds. We walked to the Han River and looked around for a spot to sit. It was so crowded--some people had tents set up and you could tell they had been there all day. We found a spot with a good view of 63 building (where they usually shoot the fireworks off from) and waited for 2 hours. When the first fireworks went off, they were further to the right and we couldn't really see them from our spot. So, we decided that we would move. We found another place and stood to watch them. There were 4 countries participating in the fireworks display. They were really cool. We stood behind a Korean couple and the guy was so expressive when he saw fireworks he liked "wooooaaaw!" all the time--it was entertaining. We decided that after the 3rd one, we would leave early so we didn't get caught in the mad rush to leave. But...it seemed that a lot of other people also had that idea too. So, we were stuck in some heavy congestion for about 30 minutes maybe, but we were also able to see some of the last display as well. For some reason, it was so difficult to get through and everyone was pushing and shoving everyone else. It was pretty crazy. Finally, we broke through the congestion and made it to the subway.

Toby's Birthday
Friday! My long day, but it wasn't so bad. I taught a pop song to my 6th graders, so my last 3 classes were pretty easy. They enjoyed the song, so that was good. The last class of the day was a bit rough--they were so antsy. I asked them to hang in there with me and told them we were playing a game and learning a song, but they were still off task and didn't listen well.
After school I was going to quick whip up a batch of cookies, but then I realized I didn't have a beater and my butter was too hard. I went to Emart to see if they had a beater--there was only one and I thought I would just wait and price shop a little before getting that one.
Then, I went on my way to Hongdae to meet my friend Colin. He and I participated in the Inje program in 2011. He's from Vancouver, Canada and is currently studying a semester exchange at Yonsei University. I met him during the IKAA Gathering conference back in August, but haven't seen him since. I'm glad we were able to hang out and am going to make it a point to spend some more time with him while he's here for the rest of his semester. Most of the students in his program are 18-20 and he's 27 so he can't really relate to his classmates. Well, we met up and went to BBQ. Colin suggested a place that grilled the meat on hot stone pebbles instead of a regular grill! We had to wait about 20 minutes to place our order and then they told us we couldn't cook the meat we chose on the grill, only beef (which was $6/order more) but other people were cooking pork on the pebbles. So, we waited another 5-10 minutes before they took our new order. Then we waited 15-20 minutes to get our meat. It was good and kind of cool to cook it on that, but I don't think I would go back because of the service.
After dinner, Kwangmin met us and we first went back to one of the stores I bought a shirt from. I wanted to return it, but because it was on sale they wouldn't let me return it. I could exchange it for another shirt of the same or higher price. So, I found another shirt I liked and then had to pay a little bit more. Then we went in search of a place to have drinks. We found a real modern/contemporary looking place and had a nice time chatting.

HOLIDAY
Today was a National Holiday, so no school! :)
I had to get up early to meet Bohye at a subway station over an hour away. As I was getting on my subway, I got a message from her saying she just woke up and would be late. I was a little disappointed because I woke up extra early and I could have slept a little more. Anyway, I got to the station and had to wait about 45 minutes for her. We got the subway to Chuncheon, a city east and a little north of Seoul. It took an hour to get there and since it was a holiday everyone was going to Chuncheon. It was very crowded and we didn't get a seat. I was actually kind of amused because our station was the first one of the line, so when it pulled up and the doors opened, everyone rushed in and tried to get a seat. It looked like a game of Musical Chairs, haha. I really wish I could have taped it because it was so funny to see.
We finally arrived and saw some pretty flowers with benches and stuff-photo op kind of place. So we went there to take pictures. I was taking a picture of Bohye and an ajuma asked me if I wanted her to take our picture so we were together. I agreed and showed her how to use the camera and went to join Bohye. Then she asked me to take pictures of her and her friends with her phone. She also asked me to take pictures with my camera! Then, she gave us her email address so I could send it to her, haha. She talked to me and asked me if I was Japanese. Unfortunately because we stopped to take pictures, the line for a taxi was so huge! While standing in line we had a grandma and grandpa behind us and the grandma asked Bohye a question about the buses/taxi. So, we started talking to them too. They asked where I was from and when I said America, they asked me if I was "gyopo" which is a Korean national living abroad. So, I just answered yes. I had a short conversation by myself with them. The grandma asked Bohye if we could share a taxi to the location we were going and then gave Bohye 2,000W for the fare. The ride only cost 2,400W so Bohye paid 400W.
Both of us were quite hungry so we went to eat right away. We had the famous "Chuncheon Dak Galbi" which is a spicy chicken stirfry. It was really good. After lunch we went Nami Island. It became really popular and famous because of a Korean drama that was filmed there. There was a shuttle boat to take us there and then we walked around the island. We heard there were ostriches on the island so we were on the hunt for them the whole time. Bohye and I finally found them in their pen! Anyway, the island was really beautiful. There were quite a few people there, but even though the island is small (only 5k around the perimeter) it didn't feel very crowded. Until we wanted to leave. And then we had to wait in line for a boat for 45 minutes. Wow. We took a taxi back to the subway station and had to stand again the hour back. When we got into Seoul, we went separate ways. I stopped in Hongdae so I could have dinner with Kwangmin and his niece. She was in Seoul to have Lasik eye surgery. We went to an Italian place and then went to a cafe. Afterwards, we did some shopping and I got 2 shirts.

Baking Day ^^
School went okay. I had promised my co-teachers I would bring in my peach dessert so I felt a little bad that I didn't have anything. While trying to explain how my toaster oven didn't work, my co-teacher kept interrupting me saying "I know, I know". I was wondering how she knew about my story before telling it... Anyway, she said she didn't tell the other teachers in our office so it was okay that I didn't bring anything.
After school I went back to the Homeplus and met Kwangmin there. We had a service person try it out and then I got nervous--what if she could make it work?! Then I would feel so silly! But, luckily (unluckily?) she couldn't get it to work either. The only other one they had was the toaster oven on display. I decided I wanted the oven bad enough so I would take the display one. I was thinking to ask Kwangmin to ask the clerk if I could keep the new pieces from my oven (oven mitt and trays) and then the clerk started switching them for me! So nice. We did the exchange and then also looked for chocolate chips (soooooo expensive!!!! around $6 for a bag--but I found a bag of mini chips and a smaller bag for around $1.75) and pudding mix.
Then we went for dinner. Once we had passed a restaurant that showed really, really cheap prices. So, we went there. It was good and the portions were really huge too! After dinner, we came back to my place and I took my raw peach cobbler out of the fridge and into the oven. About 40-45 minutes later, we had hot peach cobbler!
And a very Happy Birthday to my big Bro! :)

Bit of a Frustrating Day
Classes went alright-I used a more up-to-date song and I think the 6th graders enjoyed it. My co-teacher yelled at one class because one student was sassing her and saying he didn't need her to translate when she was explaining the lyrics. He also spoke very rudely, talking "down" to her (Korean uses varying degrees of formality and there are rules for how you should talk and address those older than you, especially your teacher).
After my 5th class, I was working on lesson plans and my co teacher told me that our open class (we will be observed by others from the school) schedule had changed. I realized class 6-4 is my favorite, and it turned out they were our open class. And then, we had to pick a different class. A few minutes later she returned and told me that in addition to the first two classes tomorrow being cancelled (which I already knew about) the other two were also cancelled! So tomorrow is going to be an easy day--8 hours of lesson planning and online training are in store for me. It would be nice not to have to go at all since I'm not really doing anything, but I still have to be at school.
I came home and collected my grocery list and headed to Emart. It was so frustrating because it is 8 stories (food in the basement and on the first 2 floors, 3 &4 have clothes, 5 is kitchen/home, 6 is appliances, 7 is sporting and 8 is food court...) and the only way to move from floor to floor is taking escalators (not stairs, but a ramp) and if you are behind a shopping cart, the only thing you can do is wait until you arrive at the next floor. It's was also difficult for me to find what I needed and navigate through the store. It wasn't so bad when I first arrived around 5, but by 5:30 it was really crowded and then I had to weave through the people. I spent over an hour looking for all the things I needed (couldn't find them all). Finally, I come home, and start preparing my peach cobbler. Cut up the peaches, mix my ingredients. Then, I go to preheat my oven. I finish with the prepping and go to put the cobbler in the oven. It's cold. It was on for about 10-15 minutes and it didn't heat. I looked all over the oven to see if there was some kind of safety/starting button. Nothing. My friend Sung Min called me to see if he could help at all with the oven. He even called Homeplus to ask them about how to use it. He said they weren't very friendly. Anyway, I chalked it up as a loss and stuck the prepared cobbler in the fridge. I don't know if I will be able to use it later or not. Sung Min suggested taking it back and returning it.
So much for my baking night! :(
After my 5th class, I was working on lesson plans and my co teacher told me that our open class (we will be observed by others from the school) schedule had changed. I realized class 6-4 is my favorite, and it turned out they were our open class. And then, we had to pick a different class. A few minutes later she returned and told me that in addition to the first two classes tomorrow being cancelled (which I already knew about) the other two were also cancelled! So tomorrow is going to be an easy day--8 hours of lesson planning and online training are in store for me. It would be nice not to have to go at all since I'm not really doing anything, but I still have to be at school.
I came home and collected my grocery list and headed to Emart. It was so frustrating because it is 8 stories (food in the basement and on the first 2 floors, 3 &4 have clothes, 5 is kitchen/home, 6 is appliances, 7 is sporting and 8 is food court...) and the only way to move from floor to floor is taking escalators (not stairs, but a ramp) and if you are behind a shopping cart, the only thing you can do is wait until you arrive at the next floor. It's was also difficult for me to find what I needed and navigate through the store. It wasn't so bad when I first arrived around 5, but by 5:30 it was really crowded and then I had to weave through the people. I spent over an hour looking for all the things I needed (couldn't find them all). Finally, I come home, and start preparing my peach cobbler. Cut up the peaches, mix my ingredients. Then, I go to preheat my oven. I finish with the prepping and go to put the cobbler in the oven. It's cold. It was on for about 10-15 minutes and it didn't heat. I looked all over the oven to see if there was some kind of safety/starting button. Nothing. My friend Sung Min called me to see if he could help at all with the oven. He even called Homeplus to ask them about how to use it. He said they weren't very friendly. Anyway, I chalked it up as a loss and stuck the prepared cobbler in the fridge. I don't know if I will be able to use it later or not. Sung Min suggested taking it back and returning it.
So much for my baking night! :(
