After dinner, we went to get pretzels to share and sat outside in a park to eat them. We enjoyed the cool evening. Then we went back to his place for a little to talk about our trip.

One year of being Friends
Today is one year that Jacob and I have been friends. A year ago we met and had dinner together for the first time. It's hard to believe it's been a whole year now. We met up and went back to the same restaurant for dinner, 구이가. (Guiga) It's a BBQ chain, but this time, the service was really bad. All of the wait-staff seemed very young and they were just horsing around in the restaurant. It was not very busy and they couldn't attend to the tables well. We both agreed we wouldn't be going back to this particular restaurant in the future.

Goodbye Katie!
After work, I met Katie in Dongdaemun. She wanted to look for something specific there, but some of the stores don't open until 9pm. We walked around a bit (she didn't have much time because she had another meeting) and I found a blazer I liked. I actually got the shopkeeper to come down quite a bit on the price. But, I didn't feel comfortable spending the cash knowing I still have a few more weeks til I get more money in my account.
When we split, I headed to the area near church. On Sunday, I stopped in an International grocery store and found all sorts of American goodies, but very expensive. I decided it would be worth it to have a Stouffer's lasagna for my Gotcha Day and went back to buy it.
I headed home afterwards and relaxed for the rest of the evening.

Usual Sunday
I went back to Hannam for church again. I enjoyed the atmosphere and priest. Even though it's a long trek, it's worth it.
After mass, I went to Noksapyeong, about 3 subway stops away from the church for lunch. I found a place that had Philly cheesesteaks and tried one with fries for a set. It was really good and I hope to go back soon!
I came home and took a nap which was much needed and felt terrific. I walked to soccer and then we played for the whole 2 hours (no subs). Our friend Jes took pictures of us playing this week. I decided I would reward myself with the hard playing with hoddek, the sweet fried pancake as a snack when I got to my neighborhood.

Wonderful Saturday
In the morning I met Jacob and we had lunch in Sinchon. Originally, we were going to go to Quiznos for a sandwich, but as we were walking there, we saw a new restaurant opened in Sinchon. It's called Karnival Pizza. Jacob had been to one of these chains near Kyunghee University and would go occasionally with some friends. We looked at the menu and saw there was a special set menu (probably for new opening) and decided we would try it! We ordered a pizza that was half Gorgonzola (Koreans love this kind of pizza-with garlic on it and honey on the side) and half "crazy potato" which had french fries and a spicy pizza sauce. The set also included a salad-we picked the BBQ salad which had steak and also pasta in it! And finally we got a drink, which was a carbonated fizzy drink with cotton candy on top! So cool! After we ate some of the cotton candy, we poured some of the (probably) Sprite over it and it melted the cotton candy to make a sweet drink. Everything was so good-we decided we would try and go back as much as we can while the promotion lasts (until Oct 31!)
After lunch, we walked back to his place which was good to walk off lunch. We did a little bit of research for our trip to Japan and hung out until Jenna contacted me. Jacob had to do some work and had a staff dinner as well. When Jenna contacted me she said she was at Hongdae Station and she said we should go to Yeouinaru Station. There are two lines at Hongdae and we actually were at the different lines! So we didn't travel there together. I got there before her and waited. We went to the river and sat and chatted for about an hour. As the sun went down it cooled off a bit. I had thrown in a cardigan as well as a scarf so I was able to give something warm to Jenna to use as well. We walked back to the station to move on to dinner when Jenna realized she didn't have a folder-case thing (she had come from work). I told her I didn't see her with it when she arrived, so she realized she forgot it on the subway! She called one of her Korean friends to talk to someone at the station and then we headed back to where she transferred and left the case. As it turned out, the stop she transferred at was the last one on the line so she really lucked out. The case was collected by the subway people right away so all we had to do was go and claim it. If she had been on a different line, it could have ended up very far away or it would have been really difficult to track. After collecting the case, we headed back to IFC/Yeouido for dinner.
We walked around and decided what to eat. We picked a Japanese-ish place and I ordered a kind of beef bibimbap and she got a fish one. It was pretty good. It was good to talk and catch up with her. After dinner we walked around the mall-it's the mal that is like an American mall. TGIF and Katie OK
Work went well-it was nice because even though I had two different COTs for my four 5th grade classes, the lesson was the same. It made it easy for me to teach the same lesson all day. After the last class, I headed back to Woori Bank to try again for the international transfer. Third time's a charm I suppose, because the guy was there and he was able to do everything. The only problem...is that I was thinking in terms of USD and not KRW...so I transfered more money that I was anticipating. When I saw what was left in my account, I was a little worried. It's about half of what I normally spend in a month. So, I have to make this last til my next paycheck (in a month). Yay. Worst case scenario is that I use my home cards to help get through the month. Luckily (maybe?) I'll be traveling a few days next month so I won't be using my Korean card at all.
After work, I headed in to Hongdae. I met up with Jacob and our friend Katie (O-K) who is visiting. I met her in 2012 and played soccer with her maybe 3-4 times before I came back to the US. When I returned in 2013 I saw her a few times before SHE went back to the US. But of course for part of the time I wasn't in Korea, Jacob came and he got to be good friends with her from soccer too. Anyway, she was doing an internship in the Philippines and was finishing that. On the way back to the US, she took a long weekend trip to Korea. We visited in a cafe for a little before heading to Mecentapolis to meet John for jjimdak (chicken and noodles) for dinner. Katie is staying with John. Dinner was great-sometimes jjimdak can be too spicy, but this was just right. We actually ordered a second, smaller bowl after we finished the first. The owner of the shop recognized John and I think we got extra stuff in our second dish. He said he used to come there all the time when he first moved into his building. After dinner we hung out at Johns while he went to go work out. I finally got to meet his hedgehog, Mr. Paul Oh. It was a fun evening.

Beautiful Run
Work went okay, nothing too special. After I had lunch there was still a little bit of time for my breaktime so I thought I would try and run to the bank and do the international transfer. I got to the bank only to find out the person that does it was at lunch and wouldn't return until 1:30. So, I headed back to work figuring I would try going to the bank first and then eat lunch when I returned to school. On the way back, I kind of felt like ice cream, so I bought a cone for me and Sophie.
After work, I decided it would be a good evening for a run. I was also wanting to eat a sandwich and wanted to go back to the place in Mecenatpolis that I went to with Katie a few weekends ago. It was a perfect plan; go for a run, have dinner, maybe stop at Homeplus for some groceries and depending on time/weather walk home.
The weather was perfect. It was the best weather for a run-not too cold and not too hot. It felt so good to be outside running; I felt really strong and did shave a minute or two off my normal time. Part of me really wanted to just get Auntie Anne's for a pretzel, but I knew it wouldn't be a good nutritional choice-no veggies at all...So I went to London Tea, the sandwich place and studied the menu. I was tempted to get the sandwich again because it was so good, but I was also interested in trying the stuffed french toast (with cranberry cream cheese) bacon and a salad. I decided that I should try something new. It was so delicious! While I was eating Jacob messaged me and said he was at HomePlus getting groceries with Lauren. He invited me to his place to help him make dinner. I decided I would join them. They were just leaving as I got there, so unfortunately I wasn't able to do any looking on my own, but I didn't need anything that badly. We ended up taking a taxi because both of them had gotten quite a lot of things.
Back at their place the three of us chatted a little bit. I helped Jacob prep some veggies for his dinner and he ate. After he finished eating and cleaning up, he showed me a surprise grocery item he got for me--japchae hoddeok (noodle and veggies in a doughy dumpling). He made one for each of us. I had to be out by the 9PM curfew and he walked me to the bus. It still takes about as much time as it did from his other place, but it's nice that I don't have to transfer at all and the bus stop is right behind my building. I stopped in Emart on my way home because I'm hoping to make stuffed meatballs soon and need ground beef. No luck with on sale beef tonight.
When I got home, I decided I would do some update on my phone. Except that I wasn't supposed to do it...and after the phone rebooted, it kind of froze and got stuck on one of the setup windows. I freaked out and was able to get a hold of Jacob on my computer to try and figure out what to do. We came to the conclusion there wasn't anything I could do and I'd have to start looking for a new phone. Just as I was giving up hope about everything, I found a way to force turn off the phone that I didn't know how to do. When the phone turned back on, I was able to get through all of the setup windows and...voila, the phone works again. The only problem is that the new update drains the battery and I already have a very weak battery. So I guess I'll still be on the lookout for another phone anyway.

Bohye
Well, this morning I was able to skype with Mom as a nice surprise since I didn't have to work. We talked for a little bit and then I got ready to go meet Bohye. I figured it would be a good day to go to the bank because I was off for a school holiday, not a normal holiday where banks would be closed.
I set off and it took me over an hour to get to the location. I went to the bank and waited for someone to help me with my International Transfer. While I was waiting Bohye came to meet me. We started doing everything and then he asked me for my passport. Which I didn't have. Because I didn't think they would need one after the account had been set up. But he said he needed it. So I wasn't able to transfer the money. He also said I wouldn't be able to exchange money either. Which was the other task-Korean Won to Japanese Yen. But then he said if it was a small amount he would do it. So I exchanged about $180. It's strange because their bills are so big, the smallest denomination is about $10. To me that's kind of crazy that the smallest bill is $10! If you lose a bill, $1, no big deal, but if you lose $10, it's a bigger deal.
Bohye and I went to get lunch at a place called Yukssam Nyengmyeon. I ordered a bibimbap and she got nyengmyeon (cold noodle soup). Then you also get a side order of bulgogi. The meat was really good. I had wanted to try this chain for awhile and never had the chance. Now I know I will go to another one when I see one.
After lunch, we did a little shopping and I found an orange-ish sweater which will be nice for fall. I also had a special request for one of my friends back home to get some makeup. I found what she needed. Bohye and I went to Mc Donald's to get ice cream and then she had to go.
At home, I was able to do some exercises and relax.

Feels like a Friday
The long day. It didn't seem so bad, maybe because I knew that tomorrow would be off.
After work I came home and started prepping dinner. Jacob came over and we had dak galbi (spicy chicken stir fry). I was able to buy the chicken with some sauce and veggies at Emart, but I added extra veggies. I also made a fried egg for each of us. When we finished dinner, we watched the last episode of The Office. I thought I would be more sad when it was over, but I wasn't. It still was a little bittersweet though.

Date to Han River
Today was an "easy" day at work. My 6th graders had a speaking test so I just had to grade their speeches. Though it was easy in the sense that I didn't have to plan much or stand up in front of them, it was kind of tiring. It was hard to hear some students, they spoke quickly and we had to make the grades fast. Also, we had to give guidance about how to do their speech and how to fill out a listening worksheet as well.
After work, I headed to GOAL to meet Jacob when he finished work. We went to Oodle Noodle (see what I mean about getting lots of Oodle Noodle?!) and got take out. Then we headed to the Han River. I had hoped to go to the southern side of the river because it's got a better view I think and it's more popular to sit there, but Jacob said he knew a spot on our side. So we walked towards where he had been and on the way found a little gazebo which was perfect to sit in. There was another one next to us, and there were 2 guys sitting in there, but it wasn't too close. Anyway, I had also brought a little mat for us to sit on and we had our dinner with the mostly set sun and a lit up bridge and river to look at. After awhile the guys next to us started playing the guitar and harmonica, so it was nice free entertainment! It started getting a little buggy and we decided to head out. Jacob tried to remember the way back and we found a bus that took us to Hongdae. We thought it would go closer to his guesthouse, but he realized it wasn't that bus. We got off and walked the rest of the way to the stop I can take one bus all the way home.

Hannam Church and Soccer
This morning I skyped with Mom for a little bit before I headed to church. I decided I would try to go back to the church near Itaewon since it is at 11AM. It's a little far-total traveling time is almost 1 hour, but not difficult to get there. As I remembered from the last time I went to this church, it is more of a parish and community than Sogang. This is an International Church and there are many families there, of all backgrounds. I enjoyed the homily and there were snacks after mass as well.
I walked from church to Itaewon to look for somewhere to have lunch. I wasn't feeling very hungry or much like eating, but decided it would be good since I had soccer later. I picked a little Italian place and ordered mushroom risotto. I was the only customer in there, but it was on the top of a hill so it had a nice view.
After lunch, I came home and I took a short nap. Then I restocked my cookie dough! :) Finally it was time to head to soccer and I decided I would walk there. I figure it's a good way to warm up. It's only about a 40 minute walk, so it's not too bad. It's also along my stream so it's nice to be in the fresher air.
We had quite a few people come out to soccer and the high school boys showed up as well. Each of our teams had 2-3 subs which is kind of annoying that we have to sit out. Walking Day
I made breakfast for Katie and me-breakfast burritos with egg and veggies. Then we decided to go to her place. It took us a little over an hour to get there. So far! I helped her fold and pack a few things. We had the movie "Heat" playing which was kind of funny and we had lunch. Her aunt had been over the day before and brought some food so it was nice to have Korean food with no prep!
I took off in the late afternoon because she had other evening plans. I just started walking to see where I wanted to go. I found myself in my "old stomping grounds" near my adoption agency's guesthouse. I used to stay here so it was nice to see this area again and I haven't been here in over a year. Earlier I had seen someone post information about a free Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra concert at Yeouido. So I was able to do something I've wanted to do in Seoul for awhile. I was on the Eastern side of Seoul, near Apgujeong and I walked along the Han River all the way to Yeouido, which is on the Western side of Seoul. It took me about 2 hours to walk that length (not sure of the distance, maybe around 11km). It was perfect, beautiful weather. I enjoyed the time to walk and see nature. I was able to smell freshly cut grass too, which I enjoy.
I arrived at Yeouido with about 5-10 minutes before the concert was scheduled to start. I sat and enjoyed the music for a little over an hour before catching the bus home. I realized the bus wouldn't be the fastest route, but it would drop me off right by my building (rather than having to take the subway and transferring at a station and walking home from the station; while it's not very much, after walking well over 11km for the day, I was done walking!).

TGIF!
This is the second full week of teaching in four weeks! I'm super spoiled at the moment. Next week I will have a day off, the following week is a three day weekend and the week after that is a 4 day weekend (my trip to Japan)! Then starts a long stretch from mid-October to the end of December with no vacation time!
Nothing special at work today. Just making sure I'm all caught up and ready for next week. The school had a vote awhile ago about the bathrooms and they are remodeling and putting in Western toilets!
After work, I headed to Hongdae. Jacob asked to see me before I met Katie, so I stopped by for a little bit. We chatted and hung out and then I went to go meet Katie. For dinner we went to Oodle Noodle. It's so funny because sometimes I go long stretches where I don't get there and then I go back and I go many times in a short span before having a long stretch where I don't go. (I was just there last Saturday) We shared the Pad Thai and Terriyaki fried rice...yum. When we finished dinner we walked around and decided to go to Sinchon because Katie heard about an event for foreigners at a pub-type place. We decided to check it out. It was a little awkward and we just kind of hung around trying to make small talk with a few other people there. We set a goal to talk to 10 people and then we took the bus back to my place. We stopped at Emart and got some snacks before returning and having a sleepover and watched video clips.

Early Dismissal
Nothing too exciting at work today...except for our early dismissal! Apparently our school has a staff volleyball team and they were playing against two other elementary school teacher teams in the area. We were all able to leave at 3 to support our team and show school spirit I guess. I lucked out and was able to ride in a car with an office staff member and one of my COTs. We got to the other elementary school, about a 10-15 minute ride and I was very surprised to see the school. It was even bigger than my school (and I thought my school was a pretty good sized school!) with 5 stories. As we walked into the building there was a little fenced area and there were probably 10 rabbits in a pen. In the school, it looked more like an American school with some lockers in the hall. The classrooms that I saw were bigger and newer looking than ours. This school also has a gym (where the volleyball was being played) with a stage and a swimming pool!
We arrived in the gym and found seats. Our school played the host school, Jeungsan Elementary School, first. They were going to do best of 3. The first game we were leading most of the way, but at the end, we lost by 2 points. The second game was no contest. We lost badly. The next school, Myeongji Elementary school played the host school. The Myeongji teachers were mostly young males. They warmed up a bit before they played and watching them, they looked like college athletes. I should mention my school's team had mostly teachers in their 30s or 40's and some possibly 50's, like our principal and new vice principal. The host school had some white-haired teachers, they looked to be solidly in their 40's and 50's. I'm not sure of the outcome of the 3rd game, because by then it was 4:40 and we were free to go, if we didn't make a commitment to stay and have dinner. I left with 2 of my COTs and 2 other homeroom teachers. I found the bus stop and rode it to Jacob's new guesthouse. It was a short ride, only 6 stops. The location of Eastern Headquarters (where the guesthouse is) will be a bit more convenient with buses to and from for us.
When I got there, Jacob was still unpacking some of his things and organizing his room with Troy. There are 2 bunk beds in their room, but right now it's just Jacob and Troy in there. We talked a little bit and then got to have some pizza that the social workers bought for the guesthouse residents. After we ate, we talked a little bit more. There is a curfew for the guesthouse and also visitor rules, so I have to leave by 9 now. I took the bus home and was able to relax and clean up a bit.

Back to Korean Class
Work went okay. It was a little chaotic in the morning because my COT asked me to teach the lesson I prepared for tomorrow, today for only one of the classes. I was finished with all the planning, but there were some things that needed to be cut before handing out to students.
While at work, I debated should I or shouldn't I go to Korean class. Going won out. I didn't go last week (I wasn't sure if there was class or not) because of Chuseok and figured, I might as well try to get back into it. I also didn't have any plans so I decided a little bit of Korean language wouldn't hurt.
Before I went to class, I stopped at the post office and also got to the downtown area with some time to spare. I did more window shopping before going to class and ended up buying a fall/winter skirt. There was still a little bit of time before class, so I sat by Cheonggyecheon and just took in the cool fall weather and the sound of the running water.
I was a bit confused when I came to class. I saw most of the same students (the ones that didn't pass Intermediate level 1 with me), the same teacher and aide. The only problem was, instead of going back over chapters 1-4, we were looking at chapters 5-8. And there was a level test too! Also found out because of the holiday there WASN'T class last week, so I'm glad I didn't try and go then (so instead of having 6 weeks of classes, there were only 5 within the same 6 week period). The class itself was pretty challenging and the test was brutal. I didn't know any of the points that was on the test, obviously. Of course I will come back for the start of the next session and start chapters 5-8 I guess. Like I said, I'm just not sure why we all advanced from 1-4 to 5-8. Anyway, my big language goal was to finish the textbook, so going ahead to these chapters advances my goal by 6 weeks (at least!).

8 Months
I made it through my most difficult and long day. It wasn't a bad day, but it wasn't really a great day either. I'm okay with "okay" though. I really focused on being patient when they weren't listening and trying to get their attention in other ways.
After work, I headed into Hongdae area to meet Jacob for dinner. I had about 30 minutes to spare before he finished work so I walked around and did some window shopping. We ended up picking the Beastro for dinner. They updated/changed their menu so we wanted to check it out. However, we ended up getting another kind of similar chicken dish and the mac and cheese again. It's really a nice place-and we both realized this is the only restaurant that servers ask you "how is everything?" or "is everything ok?" We sat and chatted for a bit and one special song for us came on while we were talking.
We moved on to Schneeballen for dessert. We both agreed it was probably around Easter the last time we had had a cronut. It was long overdue. The only problem is that since I haven't been eating much I was almost too full from dinner and couldn't finish my half of the cronut. I was bummed because it was so delicious. We decided we'd walk back to his guesthouse to walk off dinner. It is probably also the last time I will go there since they are moving out of the house on Thursday. It was nice to "say goodbye" to the house and visit one last time. I filled up my water bottle there (one less bottle to do at Emart!) before heading home.

Back in to it Monday and MK
Back to a full week of school! Last week was so nice with it being a 2 day work week! ;)
Classes weren't that exciting-pretty typical and uneventful. After work we had a staff meeting. I had such a hard time staying awake! I had meant to write some letters home and then go to the post office before meeting Min Kyung (MK) but during my hour or so of time after class before the meeting...I don't know what happened to the time! I came home and decided to take a nap because I was feeling so tired. After my nap I ran to Emart to refill my water bottles. Then it was time to go meet MK.
When I got to the station, I figured I would put some money on my card and when I left to go to the meeting place, I had someone tap me on the back as I was going up the stairs. MK was right behind me! We had to go to a camera store first for her to do an errand and then we went for dinner. As always, I let her pick since sometimes she's limited in what she can eat with her husband. She wanted to eat shabu shabu (soup) because Chris doesn't like soup! It was really good to see her again and catch up with her. It's been hard meeting her because her Dad had a stroke earlier in the spring and she wants to spend a lot of time with him. She's also married of course and lives almost an hour away. We finished dinner and moved to find a cafe so MK could help me with obtaining a certificate to do online banking on my phone (my bank changed apps so...). We ended up walking to Hongdae; it was closer for her to get home, for me to get home and we both wanted to walk off dinner.
We settled on a cafe and started doing stuff, but came to road block after road block. MK realized we should go to an ATM to figure stuff out so we walked into Hongdae to the nearest Woori Bank. Thankfully I was finally able to pay my bills and we got the certificate so I can now use the app on my phone again. I'm so indebted to MK and thankful she's my friend.

Brunch and Soccer
I woke up and skyped with Mom and Grandpa-since it was the 13th in the US. It was good talking with them and I'm glad I could wish Grandpa a happy birthday, even if it was electronically.
I lounged around most of the morning and made plans with Katie to meet for brunch in Hapjeong. We went into Mecenatpolis Mall and looked at some of the restaurants and found one she had heard of, London Tea. I looked at the menu and it looked good. We shared a sandwich that was really good. There were other salads, sandwiches, omelets, and pancakes on the menu. Since I go to Mecenatpolis frequently, I hope I can go back and try some other things there too. We chatted for a bit before she had to head back to her side of town. I was really grateful she came out to have a meal and chatting time with me.
I walked to soccer and waited for Jacob. While I was sitting on a bench, two ajushis came and sat down next to me, one on either side and then proceeded to talk over me. It was a little awkward, but they only stayed for 10-15 minutes. I don't know why they didn't sit next to each other. When Jacob arrived, we talked for a bit. His social worker called him and she was at the park of World Cup, so we met her, her husband and daughter. We chatted a little bit before going over to warm up.
We had 3 teams, but if the high school boys hadn't come, we would have been able to play 2. I'm not sure why they showed up. There is finally another girl joining at soccer. She is a new mentor at GOAL and she came to play this week. Her name is Lauren and she used to play in high school and was a goalie. Once when I was sitting out, I smacked a mosquito out of the air, but I didn't fully kill it and as it sat on my palm dying...it bit me. Unbelievable!

Happy Birthday Grandpa!
Even though we had cancelled our plans to go to Busan, I thought maybe I would still go anyway. Except, while I was in the taxi, I realized that I did not have my passport. Now, I'm not 100% positive that I need it, but I remember seeing on paper that they wanted it because I ordered from the English site as a foreigner and not the Korean site. Maybe my Alien card would have been okay, but I didn't feel like bothering with it all. So I told my taxi driver to go back.
I came home and skyped with Mom and Grandpa. Also, because I had woken up so early to catch the train, I ended up taking a nap. In the afternoon I made plans with my friend Sumi (I met her at Inje) for dinner. I took yet another walk along the stream near me, all the way to Hongdae. I stopped near the World Cup Stadium to take a break and enjoy the quiet. The sky was clear and the mountains were really pretty.
When I got to Hongdae, Sumi told me she would be an hour late, so I just sat outside and waited for her, people watching. Unfortunately I got a few mosquito bites while I waited. We finally met up and went to Oodle Noodle for dinner. I had been wanting to eat here since I'd returned to Korea. We had a long chat over dinner and then moved to a cafe. The last time we had met was in July, but it was good to see her and catch up. I'm very thankful for the girlfriends I have here.

Another old reconnection
Earlier in the week I got a message from a Korean I met through my Korean roommate at Kyunghee University. Her name is Jung Su and she studied education. Anyway, she had started a group message with some of us that had met 2 years ago asking how everyone was. She and I started talking and decided we should meet up again soon. Well, today was the day!
Work went well-my COT's are all on the same page for now, so I only had to teach one lesson for the 5th grade which was nice. In the afternoon, it got kind of dark and there was lots of thunder.
After work, I went to Jongro to meet Jung Su. I also invited Oh Mee along. She didn't have any plans until 8pm and I figured if she only knew people that were at work or something, it would be nice to have dinner with someone rather than alone. As it turned out my school was having a staff dinner, but a lot of other teachers forgot because they talked about it before Chuseok. Because of that, it wasn't a mandatory dinner. Since my COT and I decided not to go, we had to stay at school a little bit longer so we didn't meet all the teachers going to the dinner. I met up with Oh Mee and talked about her day as we waited for Jung Su to come. We went to get ddeok (rice cake) and samgypsal. It was really good-I'd never grilled ddeok before and it was really delicious. After dinner, Oh Mee had to leave to meet her other friend, Jung Su and I were going to go to Cheonggyecheon for a stroll, but it was kind of dark so we decided not to. Instead, we walked to Gwanghwamun and there was a classical music concert going on. We stood and listened for a bit. Then we went to the King Sejong Museum. We were both getting a little bit tired and she traveled a little over an hour to get into Seoul. We parted ways and said we should meet again soon. It was a little bit of a challenge to spend time with her because her English skills were not so strong, but it was great for my Korean. I always figured my listening is better than my speaking, but my reading/writing is better than my listening and I was pushed hard to communicate tonight. All the same, I had a great time and it was fun. We did end up speaking more English than Korean too.

Insadong and friends
Work went well-the 4th graders loved the writing activity. The lessons where they have fun are so enjoyable, it makes me want to keep teaching that lesson. It helps that they are engaged and excited about it. Our more challenging 5th grade class after the 4th graders did quite well which was really nice.
After work, I went to meet Oh Mee in Insadong. We grabbed dinner at one restaurant that Katie had introduced to me. We got bulgogi and rice with some healthy leafy greens. It was good, but I noticed towards the end everything started tasting really salty to me. We finished dinner and wandered around until her friend, Boyoung met up with us. The three of us walked around and poked into shops. Then we stopped in a restaurant for Boyoung to have dinner. After that, we walked to Samchon-gil, a street/area famous for cafes. We didn't end up going into any cafes, but just walking around. We made our way back to public transportation and I took off as I was getting quite tired.

Oh Mee--long time no see
I met my friend Oh Mee today. She and I met on the GOA'L homecoming program in 2009. We were able to see each other once in 2011 while I was at Inje and she visited Korea. She lives in Boston. It was fun catching up with her again.
For lunch we had dak galbi (spicy chicken stirfry). I felt a little bad because I asked what she wanted and I suggested dak galbi and then we got to the restaurant and she said she didn't really like chicken that much!
After lunch we moved on to Namdaemun. She was on the hunt for a particular gift for some people back home (kind of like a massage tool) and we figured Namdaemun would be a good place to look. We walked around for a little over an hour and at the end finally found some, but she didn't like the look of them. While we were in Namdaeum, she also was able to find other gifts for people.
I headed to Hapjeong to meet Jacob. We had decided we'd go see the movie, Lucy. First we stopped at Jamba Juice so I could get a smoothie. We sat and chatted in there until it was time for the movie. I am starting to like the assigned seats concept at Korean theaters a little bit more-it's nice to know where you will be sitting ahead of time. The movie was pretty interesting; the main bad characters were Korean and for whatever reason when they spoke in Korean, there were no translations. Luckily I knew enough to have a general idea what they said, though I'm not sure it lent itself one way or the other significantly to the plot. It was nice to have some idea of what they were saying though. I'm sure all the Koreans loved it though.
When the movie was over, we took a bus to Jacob's neighborhood to find dinner. We ended up going to a fried chicken shop that had chicken burgers. We placed our order to go (it's mostly to go anyway) and sat and waited. The owners son, 3rd grade or so, was sitting at one of the two tables in the little shop doing his homework. And when I say "doing his homework" I mean doing anything and everything EXCEPT doing his homework. He was playing with his pencil, eraser, doodling in the back of his book, starring off into space, starring at Jacob and me when we talked in English... It was kind of funny to watch him. We finally got our food and went back to his place to eat. After eating, I took the bus home. Sad the last day of the long weekend is over.
For lunch we had dak galbi (spicy chicken stirfry). I felt a little bad because I asked what she wanted and I suggested dak galbi and then we got to the restaurant and she said she didn't really like chicken that much!
After lunch we moved on to Namdaemun. She was on the hunt for a particular gift for some people back home (kind of like a massage tool) and we figured Namdaemun would be a good place to look. We walked around for a little over an hour and at the end finally found some, but she didn't like the look of them. While we were in Namdaeum, she also was able to find other gifts for people.
I headed to Hapjeong to meet Jacob. We had decided we'd go see the movie, Lucy. First we stopped at Jamba Juice so I could get a smoothie. We sat and chatted in there until it was time for the movie. I am starting to like the assigned seats concept at Korean theaters a little bit more-it's nice to know where you will be sitting ahead of time. The movie was pretty interesting; the main bad characters were Korean and for whatever reason when they spoke in Korean, there were no translations. Luckily I knew enough to have a general idea what they said, though I'm not sure it lent itself one way or the other significantly to the plot. It was nice to have some idea of what they were saying though. I'm sure all the Koreans loved it though.
When the movie was over, we took a bus to Jacob's neighborhood to find dinner. We ended up going to a fried chicken shop that had chicken burgers. We placed our order to go (it's mostly to go anyway) and sat and waited. The owners son, 3rd grade or so, was sitting at one of the two tables in the little shop doing his homework. And when I say "doing his homework" I mean doing anything and everything EXCEPT doing his homework. He was playing with his pencil, eraser, doodling in the back of his book, starring off into space, starring at Jacob and me when we talked in English... It was kind of funny to watch him. We finally got our food and went back to his place to eat. After eating, I took the bus home. Sad the last day of the long weekend is over.

South of the River
I had a lazy morning. I got to skype with both my Mom and Lilly. It was great to talk with Lilly. I got to hear about their trip to Peru and talk some other stuff with her. After talking to them i got in touch with Katie to see what she was up to. She told me to come join her and her cousin (and friends) in Gangnam area.
I got ready and made the long trek there. It took me about an hour to get down there. Katie has taken up rock climbing and she wanted to show her place to her cousin and his friends. They wanted to try it out and take a look. By the time I arrived, they had already checked it out and had moved to a cafe. We sat and chatted for an hour or so-her cousin and one of the friends spoke English really well. The other guy was pretty quiet and shy.
Katie and I finally split and took a walk to Seollung, where there are tombs from royalty from the Joseon Dynasty. It was a really pretty park and lots of green and trees around. I really enjoyed it. We then went in search of dinner. I still don't really have my appetite, but I did see a shabu shabu place and we ate there. I think it was the most I had eaten in awhile. It was fun to connect with Katie and get to know her better. After dinner, it was back to my area.

Fun with Bohye
In the morning I had a long talk with Mom which was really nice. Then it was off to Bucheon to meet Bohye. As it turned out, I arrived early and she wasn't ready yet. So I walked around to see what restaurants were open for lunch. Since this is such a big holiday, not a lot of places were actually open. When Bohye arrived, she suggested a few places, but I told her I didn't have a big appetite and we went to a kimbap shop instead.
After lunch, we decided on "Aiins World", which has miniature, but still big, replicas of different buildings or other famous landmarks from around the world. It was fun to take pictures with them. There was also a short magic show. It was okay, some of the tricks I tried to figure out how he did them. We moved from Aiins World to a nearby park. On the way, we stopped at a traditional folk "museum/village". It had some replica houses and a few activities for the Chuseok holiday. There was a big traditional swing and Bohye and I both went on it. After spending some time there, we moved on to the park. She realized we could rent bikes, so we searched for the rental place and finally found it. We rented the bikes, 3,000W/hour and set off around the big lake in the middle of the park. It was a lot of fun riding the bike and I think it was the best moment of my day. The weather was beautiful. We took a break half way through our hour and got ice cream. The flavor is called "Pig Bar" and it is vanilla ice cream with a strawberry flavored middle, coated with chocolate and cookie pieces. Um...delicious!
When we returned our bikes, we decided we'd get dinner together. I had made tentative plans with Katie for the evening, but hadn't heard back from her so I decided I'd rather continue my time with Bohye. We walked to an area nearby and tried calling a particular restaurant, but they were closed. Instead, we went to the food court at the HomePlus. When we finished dinner, I headed home-it took me a little over an hour; I came from a different subway line and station than when I arrived which was probably part of it. I also had to wait 12 minutes for the first subway!

Quiet Sunday
In the morning I got to "talk" with Amanda a little bit. I think it was good for both of us. After talking, I decided I would walk to Hapjeong and see what I could find for lunch. It was a nice walk along the stream and as I walked I thought a lot. I also had some talking time with God. It was good to catch up and offer thanks and ask for help.
I got to Hapjeong and wandered around, trying to decide what sounded good to me. I've been feeling hungry, but I don't really want to eat anything. Maybe I'm still missing food from back home. I ended up picking a cafe and getting a cheese panini with a salad, and splurged and got a peach iced tea. After lunch I walked to HomePlus and was going to get a few groceries and decided that I didn't really need anything there and didn't want to deal with the crowds so I came home. I was trying to fight it, but ended up taking a nap.
Jacob came over after he had lunch with one of his Korean friends. We had a long talk about the past week and some of the arguments we had had. I made pasta for dinner and after he cleaned up, he headed home.
I called on the support of many of my girl friends and felt lucky that they were able to offer advice and send love and prayers to me. Boyhe agreed to meet with me tomorrow.

Simple Saturday
I went for a run along my stream this morning. It was quite hot as I was finishing and as much as I wanted to complete my run, I didn't feel well and had to walk the last little bit. I came home and it felt nice to take a cold shower.
After my shower I tidied my room and waited for Jacob to contact me. In the mid afternoon I went to his guesthouse with all the items for him and Troy. Shortly after I arrived, Jacob fell asleep. When he woke, he said he wasn't feeling well so I offered to go and get dinner to bring back to the guesthouse. He wanted Subway so I went and got us sandwiches. I had hoped there would also be soup I could bring back, but unlike the Subways in the US, the Korean stores don't have that option. We had dinner and I headed home early.
When I got home, I went to fill up water bottles at Emart and see if there was anything I had to get before the holiday...but Emart was a complete mad-house I couldn't deal with it so I left.

Captain Sailor Moon!
Work went okay, but it was hard to get through knowing a 5 day weekend awaited!
After work, I went to Insadong to wait for my friend, James. His nickname he earned while we were at Inje University is "Captain Sailor Moon" and his English name is James. His Korean name is hard to pronounce and I for the life of me, probably couldn't actually remember it. Anyway, while I was sitting outside waiting for him, a street performer of sorts started this bubble show with giant bubbles. It was really cool to see and made me think of my dad.
James finally arrived, a little bit late, and we went to get tea. We chatted for about 30 minutes before he had to go and meet his other appointment. He was only in Korea a week-he lives and works in China for Nike and his vacation time is done tomorrow. It was nice catching up with him and I told him he had to come back to Korea before next August so I can see him one last time.
When we split, I came home. My bank phone app changed to a new one, so I needed to get an online bank certificate thing. I tried doing it and asked MK for help over the internet, but we were not successful. She promised to help me in person some time after the Chuseok holiday.

Lifesaver Katie
Classes went alright-those 4th grade cuties...get me every time.
In the afternoon I messaged my friend Katie to see what she was up to. She had already made plans but rescheduled them to meet with me. I told her that it was a little difficult adjusting back to Korea and Korean life so she said she wanted to spend some time with me.
We met in the Jongno area (near downtown) and went to a ddukbegi (hot stone bowl) restaurant. I ordered the soondubu (tofu stew) and you could make your own bibimbap with the side dishes. It was pretty good, but a little salty at the end.
When we finished eating, we took a stroll and wandered towards Cheonggyecheon, the stream. We walked along the stream and talked. At the start of the stream there were some tents set up for events for the holiday. We made soap for only 1,000W! While we waited for the soap to set, we walked to City Hall. We returned for our soap and talked a little bit more before heading to the subway. I really appreciated her willingness to drop her plans and travel pretty far to come meet me. It's nice to know there are friends like that.

A night in
In the morning I was able to briefly skype with Phil and Grandpa before heading in to work. That was really a nice treat. I had my 4th graders and they all seemed happy to see me and be back in class.
After work, I got groceries and...rearranged my room.I didn't change much-there's no space to, but it is still nice to have something a little bit different. Back home I was always rearranging my room and it's been a whole year so I guess change was due in here.

Terrible Tuesday and Soo Bok
I was able to sleep a little bit better last night, but still find myself awake between the hours of midnight and 4 am. That's rough.
My challenging 6th graders didn't seem so bad today, though Sophie Teacher said she had a hard time with them yesterday. My favorite 5th grade class was at the end of the day and I wished all of that grade could be as happy and content as they are.
After work, I waited for Jacob in a cafe. We had a little bit of time before meeting our friend Soo Bok, his wife and their baby daughter, Hyemi. For dinner, we went to the falafel place-since Soo Bok and his wife are vegetarian and Soo Bok is vegan I thought it would be a good place to go. I love the falafel wraps here-it always hits the spot. Hyemi is adorable-she is one happy baby too. After dinner we all split ways. Jacob had to go back to work, so I walked back with him and took the bus home.

Jacob.
I came to work early because I knew there were some things I hadn't been able to print and needed to finish before my first class. When school time started, my life COT took me down to say hello to the Principal and VP, and introduce me to the new VP.
The first day back was alright. I really appreciate my 6th grade COT teaching skills, management and how we share/work together. It made Monday back an easy adjustment. I found a note from the afterschool teacher, Eric. He and his program did not get renewed at my school unfortunately, so he wrote a note to say goodbye. We didn't interact a whole lot (maybe 1-2 minutes Mondays and Tuesdays) but part of me was still sad that they left and I couldn't say goodbye in person. He was friendly and the kids definitely loved his class (since our office is right next to the ER we could always hear them). At the end of the day we had a staff meeting and finished right on time.
I couldn't wait to get out of school-I grabbed a bus and headed to BoA Guesthouse, where the GOAL program is running their First Trip Home for adoptees. I finally got to see Jacob. We had to wait for another staff member to take over for him and he got to leave for a short dinner break.
We started walking back towards his guesthouse and were deciding what to eat. Jacob has been eating Korean food, bibimbap, every day so we picked Subway. We took the sandwiches back to his guesthouse to eat. It was quite hot today, guess going home was a nice break from the weather here too. We had about two hours to relax and hangout before he had to go back, but then they ended up needed him back sooner. We walked back to BoA and I took the bus home. The bus ride made me really sleepy and I went to bed when I got home, but I still can't sleep through the night. That darn 13-14 hour time difference is rough!
